1. What is BECON?
BECON stands for Baylor Educational COmputing Network. This is a course management system powered by Blackboard, Inc. Many courses for Graduate, Allied Health and Medical students are posted in BECON. Access is through an assigned username and password.

2. Is my BECON password the same as my Baylor email password?
No, your BECON password is not the same as your Baylor email password. BECON and the Baylor email are independent of each other. Your password for BECON is issued by a BECON system administrator. Please call the Education Resource Center at 713-798-4746 for assistance with your BECON username and password.

3. Can I access BECON from home?
Yes, you can access BECON from home. To access BECON from an off-campus location, you will need to first set up a VPN connection.

4. How do I enroll in a course?
To enroll in a course, launch BECON. Once you locate the course you want, click on the Enroll button and follow the prompts. You will then find your name in the course roster. Without enrolling, you will not be able to access quizzes or evaluations.

5. How do I get access from home to electronic journals and databases at HAM-TMC Library?
To access the HAM-TMC electronic journals and databases from home, use your Baylor VPN.

6. How do I get access from home to online items specific to the ERC?
Some online items (BayCat, BECON, MDConsult, Harrison’s, MDConsult) can be accessed through the Baylor Virtual Private Network (VPN). Directions for setting up a VPN connection are located on the ERC web site (question 7).

7. Why do I need a VPN connection? How do I establish a VPN connection?
A VPN connection provides off-campus access to the databases and full-text journals at the HAM-TMC as well as the ERC's subscription to Harrison's and other online resources. See the set-up instructions below:

8. Who can help with my Baylor email account?
Baylor’s IT Support department is responsible for email accounts on the campus. Please call 713-798-8737 between the hours of 8:00 - 5:00 to report problems. Some email questions can be answered from their web site FAQs.

Note: Answers to items 9-12 open in the HAM-TMC Library web site.

13. Where can I store a computer/digital file?
The ERC provides each student with a home folder on our ERC server. This folder can be used to temporarily store personal files provided the files meet educational needs directly related to Baylor College of Medicine academic work. Music files, personal photos (wedding, baby pictures, etc) are not permitted. Each home folder has a 25mb storage capacity. The Education Resource Center is not responsible for integrity of student computer files. The BCM Acceptable Use Policy applies to any material stored on a BCM server.

In order to use your home folder log on to any computer on the BCM computer network. To access this folder double click on my computer, then the drive labeled Z. Any questions regarding your student folder should be directed to Johnny Kow at ckow@bmc.edu.

14. Can I burn my files to CD-ROM?
The computers in both labs are equipped with CD burners. Students may bring their own CD-R to save content. CD-R is “shorthand” for CD-Recordable. Recordable CDs are WORM (Write Once, Read Multiple) media that work just like standard CDs. As a convenience, the Circulation Desk provides CD-Rs for $.50 each. Instructions for burning a CD are posted in the labs and the Circulation Desk attendant or computer lab assistant can provide assistance. The BCM Acceptable Use Policy applies to this device.

15. What other file saving/storage options are available?
Pen Drives - A pen drive is an easy way to transfer files from notebook to desktop or vice versa. Most fit on a key chain. These drives connect to a USB port to quickly transfer all types of files. Pen drives come in a variety of sizes (64mb to 1GB) and price ranges and are handy file storage.

BECON -- Enabling the Discussion Board feature for a course in BECON, the course management system powered by Blackboard, Inc., allows an “enrolled” student to upload files. Again, this tool is for academic work only and the BCM Acceptable Use Policy applies to this communication tool.

BCM Student Forum -- The BCM Student Forum allows you to upload documents. Please be sure to review the Guidelines and Policy for posting to the forum. The BCM Acceptable Use Policy applies to this communication tool.

Big File -- This BCM communication tool allows you to upload a large file and it will remain on the Big File Server for 30 days. The BCM Acceptable Use Policy applies to this communication tool. Colleagues at other institutions can also use this tool to upload large files for Baylor students and faculty.

Yahoo, Road Runner, Earthlink and other Internet Service Providers often offer a specific amount of storage space to their customers. For example, Yahoo offers 100mb of email storage and Yahoo Plus ($19.99) offers “virtually unlimited” storage.

16. Does the college provide free anti-virus software for students?
The college provides free anti-virus software and requires that all machines connected to BCM have the Norton's Anti-Virus Corporate edition software installed. To perform this installation outside of the Baylor network, you should have a DSL or Cable connection and not use a dial-in connection over a standard modem. You must have 100 MB free on C:\ for the installation package to install. For the installation download and additional information please go to the Information Technology Program Support web page. The IT Support Program also has an FAQ section and information about computer viruses and computer hoaxes.

17. Does the college provide wireless access on campus?
Wireless LAN, or WLAN, is available to the Baylor community anywhere on the main Baylor campus. Wireless is also available in all of Baylor offices in the Baylor Clinic, the Faculty Center and at the John P. McGovern (Nabisco) campus. See more information on wireless access at our wireless services page.

18. How soon after lectures will the streaming videos be available on the web?
A new policy instituted in 2005 states that streaming video of the lectures will be made available AFTER 5:00pm on the day of the lectures. (It will not be made available before that time.) Some interactive sessions will not be videotaped, including those with live patient presentations, case discussions, or small-group application activities.

19. Why do we need to log on to the lab computer? I never had to before…what’s going on??
The College’s Information Technology department is transitioning all users to a technology called Active Directory. This means that each College employee (faculty, staff, and students) will have to use an individual logon to access a computer. Generic logons were used in the past (i.e. Dell23/student) and are no longer permitted with the new technology. The Active Directory technology is an additional way to protect the College’s network, intellectual property, student, faculty and employee information and clinical information.

20. How can I log on to the computer?
Log on to a lab computer with your Enterprise Computing Account (ECA) Baylor College of Medicine E-mail user name and password. This is issued to you when you arrive on campus.

21. What is an Enterprise Computing Account?
An Enterprise Computing Account is the basic account issued to all Baylor College of Medicine faculty, staff, and students, as well as other people associated with Baylor College of Medicine under special circumstances. This account is primarily used for checking email, dialing directly into Baylor College of Medicine's network, or accessing some of the enterprise resources that require user authentication. This account is sometimes referred to as an "email account", "watson account", or "express account". While these references are understood, it is best to refer to your main Baylor computer account as your ECA or Enterprise Computing Account.

22. What is the password to log on to the computers?
The password to log on is the long string of alpha-numeric characters issued to you when your email was given to you. If you are an existing student, you probably have changed that issued password to something that you can remember. If you are a new student, you will want to change that password to something meaningful to you, yet secure.

23. Since the generic login has gone away how do I get to the “Student Folder” to store documents?
The “Student Folder” on the Albatross server is no longer available. However, you can still store up to 25mb of data on the server under your own folder name on the Z drive. Because of Active Directory, this is only available to Allied Health and Medical Students. If allowed to, Graduate students could save to a shared file on their department server.

24. I can not log on using my Baylor E-mail password…what should I do?
If you can not logon to the computer with your ECA account, check to make sure that you are logging in correctly (make sure that the CAPS LOCK key is not turned on – passwords are generally case sensitive). If this does not solve your access issue, contact the ERC staff for assistance with resetting your password or you may contact the College’s Information Technology HELP DESK at 713-798-8737.

25. Where can I get more help with my email?
The College Information Technology Help Desk is located in the Services building, suite 312H. Their office hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8a – 5p. Be certain to take your BCM identification card.
